Building A Musical Band
In this project, we were tasked to build musical instruments that played all seven notes. For those unfamiliar with the seven musical notes, they are: A,B,C,D,E,F,G. Those are the notes on a basic scale in music. We were told to make three instruments; a chime/drum set, a string instrument, and a wind instrument. We were not allowed to take apart an instrument and use those pieces of the broken down instrument. We had to make these instruments all from scratch. We could use any material we thought would help us create the best and most efficient instrument. Along with the three instruments, we also had to create a song that fits the instruments well.
Key Concepts
Vibration - A wiggle in time
Wave - A wiggle in space and time
Wavelength - Distance from top of crest to troughs, units meters
Crest - High point of wave
Trough - Low point of wave
Amplitude - Distance from midpoint to crest, units meters
Frequency - How often a vibration occurs, units hertz
Period - Amount of time between waves, units seconds
Velocity(Wave Speed) - Wavelength x Frequency, units meters/seconds
Hertz - Unit of frequency
Pitch - The subjective impression about the frequency of sound
Compression - A pulse of compressed air
Rarefaction - The disturbance in air when the pressure is lowered
Natural Frequency - The vibration of an object's set of frequencies
Resonance - When the frequency of a forced vibration matches its natural frequency
Beats - The periodic variation in the loudness of sound
Shorter wavelengths = Higher notes
Longer wavelengths = Lower notes

Reflection
During this project, I felt like our group focused and did the stuff that we were supposed to do and do them on time. The group of Nick Radcliffe, Zach Roesler, and I, bonded really well. We got off task a few times but we knew when it was time to bear down and focus in the task at hand. I learned a ton of cool stuff throughout the project like finding the wavelengths of notes and learning how to play a wooden harmonica.
